What to Know Before Visiting Egypt

Almost every Egypt itinerary is built from the same four or five pharaonic sites, and they deserve their reputation. The problem is that a great many visitors leave having seen only the oldest layer of a country that has been continuously inhabited ever since.

Cairo is at least three cities
Islamic Cairo — the medieval city of mosques, madrasas and the Khan el-Khalili — is a UNESCO-listed urban fabric people still live and work in. Coptic Cairo holds churches and a synagogue from a Christian and Jewish history that long predates the modern city around it.
Neither is a detour from the pyramids. They are the reason the city exists in the shape it does, and a day in each changes what the pharaonic sites mean.
The Nile is infrastructure
It is easy to experience the river as a cruise backdrop. It is a working waterway: irrigation, transport, fishing, and the reason the settlement pattern of the entire country is a thin green ribbon.
If your itinerary includes a cruise, ask what you will see from it besides temples.
Nubia and the south
Aswan and the far south are Nubian, with their own language, architecture and history. The construction of the High Dam in the 1960s flooded much of ancient Nubia and displaced Nubian communities; the international campaign that moved Abu Simbel and other monuments to higher ground is the reason the World Heritage Convention exists in its modern form.
The monuments were saved. Understanding what was not is part of visiting them.
Building an itinerary with more than one layer
- Give Cairo more than the airport day it is usually allotted
- Put at least one non-pharaonic site in each city you stop in
- Ask whether your guide is an Egyptologist, a general guide, or both — they answer different questions
- Budget for the heat and plan the outdoor sites early in the day
