Best Time to Visit Senegal

Most guides to Senegal open with a table of months. This one does not, and the reason is worth stating rather than hiding: no climate authority for Senegal was reachable when this page was written, and a month-by-month table assembled from memory is exactly the sort of thing that looks authoritative and is not.

What can be said, from sources that were read, is what the Senegalese year is actually organized around.

The year turns on the rains

The single most useful thing to understand is that Senegal has a rainy season and a dry one, and that a great deal is arranged relative to the change.

UNESCO's description of the Xooy divination ceremony is explicit about it: the Serer hold Xooy in village squares before the rainy season, and the questions the master seers are asked are about the rains, plagues and illnesses. When a community organizes a major ceremony around forecasting the rains, the rains are the axis of the year. Plan around which side of that change you want to be on, and confirm the current timing locally.

Two properties this cluster does not otherwise cover

Senegal has seven World Heritage properties. Five are cultural and each has its own page in this cluster. The other two are natural, and they are the reason a visit can be timed for wildlife rather than for architecture.

Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, inscribed in 1981, sits in the Senegal River delta: a wetland of 16,000 hectares of lake, streams, ponds and backwaters that UNESCO describes as a living but fragile sanctuary for some 1.5 million birds, among them the white pelican, the purple heron, the African spoonbill, the great egret and the cormorant.

Niokolo-Koba National Park, inscribed the same year, lies along the banks of the Gambia river. Its gallery forests and savannas hold Derby elands, the largest of the antelopes, along with chimpanzees, lions, leopards, a large population of elephants and many birds, reptiles and amphibians.
