Why Sierra Leone

One World Heritage property, inscribed very recently, and no intangible heritage elements. On paper that is a short entry, and it undersells a country whose forest is part of one of the most biologically important blocks in Africa.

The photograph at the top of this page is Freetown, which sits on a peninsula under steep hills with the estuary in front of it. The geography is the reason the city looks the way it does.

Food

Cassava leaf, pounded and cooked long with palm oil and fish or meat, is the dish to try first and the one people are most attached to. Groundnut stew is rich and slow. Rice is the base of nearly everything, and poyo, the palm wine, is drunk fresh and does not travel.

What is in the Gola-Tiwai Complex

Sierra Leone was inscribed in 2025 for the Gola-Tiwai Complex, a serial property joining the Gola Rainforest National Park to the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary. It is part of the Greater Gola Landscape and it sits inside the Upper Guinean Forest, which is a biodiversity hotspot in the technical sense rather than the promotional one.

The numbers in the citation are worth reading slowly. More than a thousand plant species, of which 113 are endemic. Fifty-five mammals, of which nineteen are globally threatened. Up to 448 bird species.

Two of the animals deserve their names said out loud. The pygmy hippopotamus, which is nocturnal, forest-dwelling and about a quarter the weight of the hippopotamus everyone pictures. And the white-necked rockfowl, an endangered bird that builds a mud nest on rock faces and looks like nothing else.

Practical orientation

English is the official language and Krio is what is spoken across the country. The currency is the leone. Freetown’s international airport is at Lungi, across the estuary from the city, so arriving involves a water crossing or a long drive around.

The US advisory of 15 September 2025 places Sierra Leone at Level 2, exercise increased caution, for crime, civil unrest and inadequate health infrastructure, with no Do Not Travel area. It contains one instruction specific enough to plan around: do not travel outside the Freetown peninsula after nightfall.
