Best Time to Visit Seychelles

The answer is not a month. It is a coast, because the monsoon that makes one side of an island safe to swim makes the other side dangerous.

Most best-time articles about tropical islands settle on a season and stop. Seychelles has a better answer than that, and it comes from the safety advice rather than from a weather chart.

Two winds, two coasts

The UK FCDO records that beaches in Seychelles can be safe for swimming at some times of the year and dangerous at others, and it ties that directly to two seasons.

In general the west coast is unsafe during the north-west monsoon, around December to March. The east coast is unsafe during the south-east winds season, around May to September.

So the useful question is not when to come but where to stay when you do. A property on the wrong coast for the season is a property whose beach you should not swim from, and that is a bigger difference to a trip than a few degrees of temperature.

What follows from that

  • Pick the coast to suit the season, or pick a season to suit the coast you want.
  • Beaches at the southern tip are not suitable for swimming at any time of year.
  • Beau Vallon, one of the most popular beaches, may have dangerous rip currents when the sea is rough.
  • Beaches do not always carry safety information, and there are not many lifeguards, though some are stationed on popular beaches.
  • Ask locally about conditions before you go in, and follow any warning signs.

One thing that is true right now

The US CDC records an active outbreak of chikungunya in Seychelles and recommends chikungunya vaccination for travelers going to an area with an outbreak. That is current rather than seasonal, and it is a reason to talk to a travel clinic several weeks before you book rather than the week you fly.

The same page carries no malaria section for Seychelles at all, which is unusual for this series and worth confirming for your own itinerary rather than taking from us.

And what we are not going to invent

We are not going to publish a rainfall table. Nothing in the sources we read carries Seychelles climate data, and a season chart written from memory is exactly the thing this publication does not do.
