Kibira National Park is a Do Not Travel area, and it is also a 2026 World Heritage nomination

Burundi is at Level 3, reconsider travel, in the US advisory of 29 April 2025, for political violence, crime and health. Within that it names as Do Not Travel: Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces and Kibira National Park, for potential armed violence, and the former Central Market on Chaussee Prince Louis Rwagasore in Bujumbura, for the risk of violent crime.

Kibira National Park is also one of the seven sites Burundi added to its World Heritage Tentative List in 2026. The same forest is being put forward for recognition as a place of outstanding value and named as a place not to enter. Both are current, both are on the record, and this page draws nothing further from the pair.

The advisory also records that police and military checkpoints are common and can limit movement, that the borders may close without notice, and that there are no adequate trauma services in the country. Read it in full.

Why Burundi

A small, densely populated country of hills at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika, bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The lake is the second deepest in the world and it is on the 2026 nomination list, along with the Karera Falls and the Nyakazu fault. Read down that list and it is clear what Burundi considers itself to be: water, escarpment, forest, and one royal site.

Food

Beans, plantain, cassava and sweet potato carry most meals, with fish from Lake Tanganyika on the plate near the water. Sorghum beer has a social role beyond the drinking of it. Coffee is the country’s best known export and comparatively little of the good crop stays at home.

Absent from the list of places, present on the list of practices

Burundi has no World Heritage property. It has ten sites on its Tentative List, and the dates on them tell two different stories. Three were filed in 2007: the sacred natural landscapes of Muramvya, Mpotsa and Nkiko-Mugamba, the source of the Nile at Gasumo, and the Rusizi nature reserve. Seven more were filed in 2026: the royal residence at Gishora, Lake Tanganyika, the Nyakazu fault, Ruvubu National Park, the Karera Falls, Kibira National Park, and the northern lakes.

What it does hold is one element on the intangible heritage lists: the ritual dance of the royal drum, on the Representative List. The photograph at the top of this page is of those drums, standing in a courtyard at Gitega with nobody playing them.

This site now carries five countries with nothing on the World Heritage List, and they are not absent in the same way. Eswatini, Liberia and Equatorial Guinea are absent from both lists. Djibouti and Burundi are absent only from the one that is about places. The difference between those two is timing: Djibouti filed all ten of its nominations in 2015 and has waited since, while seven of Burundi’s ten were filed this year.

Practical orientation

Kirundi and French are the official languages. The currency is the Burundian franc. Bujumbura remains the economic capital and largest city on Lake Tanganyika, and Gitega, where the drums in the photograph stand, is the political capital.
