Akagera National Park: Visitor and Heritage Guide

Akagera is the odd one out in Rwanda. It is savannah rather than forest, it is driven rather than walked, and it is the country's only big game park. It is also the best documented restoration project in the region.

What it is

Established as a national park in 1934, Akagera is described by its managers as Central Africa's largest protected wetland and Rwanda's last remaining refuge for savannah adapted species. It is lake, papyrus swamp and open country in the east of the country, on the Tanzanian border, and it looks nothing like the rest of Rwanda.

For a visitor whose mental image of Rwanda is terraced hills and rainforest, the first hour in Akagera is disorienting in a useful way. This is a country of more than one landscape.

The restoration, with dates

In 2010 the Rwandan government invited African Parks to partner with the Rwanda Development Board in managing Akagera, and the Akagera Management Company was established late that year with board members from both.

What followed is unusually specific and worth stating as a sequence. Lion were reintroduced in 2015, having been absent for around two decades. Eastern black rhino returned in 2017 and again in 2019. Thirty southern white rhino arrived in 2021, and a further seventy in June 2025 as part of a wider rewilding initiative.

The claim the managers make about enforcement is the one that carries the most weight: not one high value species has been lost to poaching since 2010.

Who it is for, and who pays

Ten per cent of the park's income goes to Rwanda's revenue sharing scheme, funding community projects including schools, health facilities and cooperatives. Over 3,000 community members visit the park each year through an environmental education program.

That matters to how you read the place. Akagera was heavily settled and heavily hunted within living memory, and the restoration has been possible because the surrounding communities have a stake in it rather than despite them. A visitor who treats it as untouched wilderness has the story backwards.

Visiting

Akagera is a driving park, which makes it the most accessible major site in Rwanda for anyone who cannot walk far. Game drives, boat trips on Lake Ihema and night drives are the standard activities. It is a comfortable two to three hours from Kigali, which makes an overnight trip realistic in a way that the western parks are not.

Expect a different rhythm from tracking. Nothing is guaranteed and nothing is walked to; you look, and you wait.
