Tunisia is straightforward to enter. There is no visa to arrange in advance for most visitors, the passport requirement is unusually relaxed, and the airport at Tunis Carthage is small enough to cross quickly. The two things worth knowing are both small and both cost money or time if you miss them.
Ninety days, and a passport that only has to last the trip
You can visit Tunisia without a visa for up to 90 days. Holders of Crown Dependency passports are the exception and may need to buy a visa on arrival, and anything that is not tourism has its own route through the Tunisian embassy responsible for your country.
The passport rule is notably lighter than Morocco's. Tunisia asks only that your passport be valid for the duration of your stay, where Morocco wants three months beyond your arrival date. If you are combining the two countries in one trip, the stricter rule is the one to pack for.
The two that catch people out
The tax is collected at the property rather than at the border, which is why it surprises people at check in.
- Make sure your passport is actually stamped on arrival. The FCDO says so explicitly, and an unstamped entry becomes your problem on the way out.
- Budget for the tourist tax. It is 8 dinars per person per night in a three star hotel and 12 in a four or five star one.
- The tax is charged for a maximum of ten nights, so a longer stay pays for the first ten only.
- It cannot be reclaimed if you leave early.
- Declare anything prohibited, taxable or dutiable. Tunisia has strict rules on what may be brought in and taken out.
- If you are bringing a drone, check the rules before you fly rather than at the airport.
