Mindelo throws the country's best-known carnival. This page does not tell you when, because nobody we could reach publishes the date.

Carnival in Mindelo, on Sao Vicente, is the gathering Cape Verde is best known for outside its own waters. Costumed groups rehearse for months and take the streets for days.
This page gives no date for it. Carnival moves with the church calendar, and no Cape Verdean authority we could reach publishes a schedule we could cite. Ask locally, or ask your operator, and book early either way.
Music is the through line
The country's only UNESCO-inscribed tradition is morna, and it is not a festival: it is played in bars, at home, and at the end of long evenings. A visitor looking for it should look for an ordinary night rather than an event.
Mindelo is where to look. The island's airport is named for Cesaria Evora, the singer who carried morna to audiences who had never heard of the archipelago, and the harbor there is the one the songs are about.
If you want to be there for something
- Ask locally for dates rather than trusting a published calendar.
- Accommodation in Mindelo at carnival is booked far in advance. Plan months out or stay elsewhere.
- Inter-island sailings and flights fill up around any major gathering.
- Performers expect to be photographed. Bystanders do not. The distinction is worth keeping.
- For morna, ask where people are playing rather than where a show is scheduled.
